    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;The TriBe is planning another large scale art project for Burning Man 2006, and we'd like to invite you and your friends to be a part of it. In 2006 we are going to break the Guinness Worlds Record for the longest Chinese Festival Dragon! The current record is 1.89 miles, set at the great wall of China. We will attempt to break that record by connecting 530 twenty foot body sections together on the playa. 
&lt;br/&gt; 
&lt;br/&gt;Made From HULA HOOPS!
&lt;br/&gt;Here's the easy part. Each section is made from HULA HOOPS - PVC SPRINKLER PIPE AND BED SHEETS... that's It! There are no special tools or expensive materials required. You can decorate it as much or as little as you want. The fiery and animated head will be created by Burning Man artist Jim Bowers, creator of the Eyes Of Gawd.
&lt;br/&gt;So build as little as 10 feet or get your whole camp together - throw a dragon building party weekend - and build a 100 footer!

    <title>Open fire safety seminar and demo!</title>

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;The Phoenix Projekt Fire Conclave will be hosting a fire safety seminar and demo open to the community, and everyone's invited to attend. A Marx Bros. representative (no relation to Groucho, Chico, Harpo, or Gummo) will be on hand to demonstrate proper use and handling of extinguishers, as well as to share knowledge from one of the most respected names in the fire safety business. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Points to be covered include, but are not limited to: 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;*Proper use, storage, and handling of safety equipment and fuels. 
&lt;br/&gt;*Which type of extinguisher to use on which type of fire. 
&lt;br/&gt;*Flash and flame points of various fuels, and discerning the differences between these. 
&lt;br/&gt;*Regulations (county and otherwise) governing safety equipment and practices. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Finally, at the end of the course, each person will take a turn choosing an extinguisher and using it to put out a contained 6' x 6' inferno. (And if you think spinning fire is exciting - as it definitely is - just wait 'til you get to put a huge one out!) 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The fee for the class is $15, which covers recharging of equipment as well as the chemical replacement. 
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The location is: 10275 Sunland Blvd., in Shadow Hills (just off the 210 fwy.) The time and date will be June 12th, at 12:00 noon. Richard (the Marx Bros. rep) will notify the fire dept. of the event. See you there!

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;Y'all's photos are totally rad. I have been spinning fire poi pretty regularly for 4 months now, but I never thought about putting the fuel in water. After I looked through some of the tribe's pictures I went into my kitchen to try it out (on a small scale). I completely forgot about the smoke alarm. :) Are y'all just using good ole' white gas?
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;I used to be into fountain building, but I dropped out of it for a couple years out of lack of original ideas. I've still got some pumps, though, and I'd love to try and make a miniature fire fountain to use as a backdrop when I'm spinning.

    <title>New Fire Conclave Group in LA!</title>

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;That's right - there is a new Fire Conclave group for LA fire artists who want to perform in the Circle on Burn Night this year, and this is an open invitation to anyone who would like to join.  The Phoenix Projekt, www.phoenixprojekt.org LA's brand-spank-me-new Conclave, was formed to give artists an opportunity to practice, to play, and ultimately to perform with over six hundred (!) fellow fire performers around the Man just before his immolation.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;	Sammy Bliss, who was been hosting Monday Night Playtime mondaynightplaytime@yahoogroups.com at the Middle Space Theatre on Cahuenga Avenue in Hollywood, has been gracious enough to also open his doors on Tuesday nights at 8:00 p.m. for the Phoenix Projekt, which is meeting weekly every Tuesday.  For directions, please email the Monday Night Playtime group.  Practice for this year's choreographed piece will begin at 8:30, and everyone is welcome to stay and play afterward.  If you have a piece you would like to do for the renegade portion of the Burn, this is a good time and place to rehearse it as well.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;  If you are interested in drumming for the performance, you can contact Reid De Fever at www.drumconsortium.com for practice times and locations.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;	The poi choreography can also be found at www.drumconsortium.com.  Please take the opportunity sometime this week to check it out - it spans about 2 and a half minutes and is composed of fairly basic moves.  The lovely Sass demonstrates the sequence from two different angles, and she has agreed to be on hand as well next Tuesday for coaching.

&lt;br/&gt;We ’ll set up our camp around the center circle in a ‘U ’shape that will extend away from the water so that we can expand the camp as more people arrive.  
&lt;br/&gt; 
&lt;br/&gt;On that note, several people have mentioned they will have there own trailers there as well.  
&lt;br/&gt;The wind is generally from the northwest (so the locals have told me) so we ’ll create the ‘bottom ’of the ‘U ’with our trailers to help establish our camp while providing a wind break as well.  
&lt;br/&gt; 
&lt;br/&gt;The ‘base ’trailer is well equipped but does not have a generator.  
&lt;br/&gt; 
&lt;br/&gt;So here ’s my wish list &amp;amp; feel free to add your requests and ideas to the list as well.  
&lt;br/&gt;I ’m sure with the numbers that are coming, we can bring a really great vibe to this gathering.  
&lt;br/&gt; 
&lt;br/&gt;1) Someone has offered to loan me a small generator but a back up genie would be helpful.  
&lt;br/&gt; 
&lt;br/&gt;2) Sound system; Someone earlier offered to bring a system but in the barrage of emails I can ’t find it @ the moment.  
&lt;br/&gt;We ’ll be drumming on our own sometimes but that won ’t carry us thru the entire weekend.  
&lt;br/&gt;If there ’s a DJ in the crowd it will add to the vibe &amp;amp; we can still drum &amp;amp; spin to the mixes as well.  
&lt;br/&gt; 
&lt;br/&gt;3) Burn barrels; a few would be nice to have around the perimeter of the circle.  
&lt;br/&gt; 
&lt;br/&gt;4) Tiki torches and lamps to outline the circle.  
&lt;br/&gt; 
&lt;br/&gt;5) Lots of wood; We ’ll be having a fire pit &amp;amp; hopefully a second if there ’s enough burnables.  
&lt;br/&gt;Every bit helps &amp;amp; adds up. If everyone brings a little something it will be a huge help.  
&lt;br/&gt; 
&lt;br/&gt;6) Trash bags; Most of us already know &amp;amp; live by a “LEAVE NO TRACE ”attitude.  
&lt;br/&gt;The area is home to several ‘protected ’species of birds and other animals as well as being simply, a clean environment for ‘everyone ’to enjoy.  
&lt;br/&gt;It can &amp;amp; probably will get windy at times so don ’t leave things lying around that can blow away.  
&lt;br/&gt;It really doesn ’t matter where or who the trash / moop came from; clean as you go.  
&lt;br/&gt;If we all bring and keep trash bags handy, we can leave this a beautiful beach for everyone &amp;amp; be welcome back to do this again.  
&lt;br/&gt;Let ’s all do everything we can to leave the area as pristine &amp;amp; beautiful as possible.  
&lt;br/&gt; 
&lt;br/&gt;7) Tables; a few tables to set up out side the base trailer &amp;amp; at the fuel dump.  
&lt;br/&gt; 
&lt;br/&gt;8) Fire extinguishers; I have one &amp;amp; I ’m hoping to borrow more but we need to have them stationed &amp;amp; available in several well marked areas around the circle perimeter.  
&lt;br/&gt; 
&lt;br/&gt;9) Large chest; I have a 4 ’x2 ’x2 ’portable tool chest to ‘help ’protect and ‘temporarily ’store fuel at the fuel dump but we MUST have a well marked, safe, designated NO BURN area FOR ALL FUELS. Any additional protective, ventable enclosures would be appreciated.  
&lt;br/&gt; 
&lt;br/&gt;10) Buckets or small tubs to keep clean wet safety towels.  
&lt;br/&gt; 
&lt;br/&gt;11) Glow sticks; I ’ll bring some but we can use more to help designate &amp;amp; mark areas like the fuel dump.  
&lt;br/&gt; 
&lt;br/&gt;12) Anyone who wants to take still photos or has a video camcorder (preferably mini DV, but whatever) there ’ll be some kool moments. And if we can collect enough footage, I ’ll put together a video of the gathering.  
&lt;br/&gt; 
&lt;br/&gt;13) The idea has been presented that perhaps a specific web page for the gathering would be helpful as there are some people not on Tribe or in case the Tribe site goes down.  
&lt;br/&gt;I don ’t have a personal web site and never set one up, so any helpful hints on web design would be greatly appreciated.

    <title>F-Space show ROCKED!!!</title>

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;I owe a giant THANK YOU!! to everyone who set up art, performed, helped out, and came and pitched in for the show last saturday!  WOW WHAT A SHOW!!!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Friday [or rather saturday] night at about 4:00am, we got Ryon's Eye up on it's arched legs!  It was almost frightening to see it up there -- it's HUGE!!  The late night made for a groggy morning, but people came out of the woodwork to help with the last minute clean and check, cleaning the bathroom and shop, putting up bathroom and exit signs, refueling, watching door and street and security, setting up, cooking food for the volunteers, and more and more art coming out of the woodwork, F-Space breathing through their setup, and so on.  It was stunning to watch it all come together perfectly!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The show was *awesome* [from what I could see from my stressed and sleep-deprived brain. :) ]  I resisted falling into a trance while F-Space played.  I watched the audience that varied from standing transfixed, to rocking wide-eyed, to head banging!  And Amaker was a mosh pit of one, I think! :)
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Scot Jenerik bathed Egeria in his flame thrower and ignited her for the finale!  Wow.  Wow!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Scott's dad thanked us bunches and had a great time [and is inspired to possible join or start a band of his own!].  Fun was had by all, and in particular those who made this amazing show happen!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;F-Space and the Shipyard folks are already talking about collaborating -- doing more than merely setting up art and playing beneath it, but working together to make some giant art/performance massive sculptural instrumental freakouts where the boundary between our art and their music does not exist!  They want to come back, we want them back, and we want to do MORE next time!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;And, personally, I'm way into the "dessert show" time -- 8-10.  Just after dinner, just before heading into the City.  Short enough and cheap enough everyone can head out to more fun when it's done!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;So anyway, thank you thank you thank you!  It was a very special event!  I am continually amazed and touched by everyone around us.  We *all* made this happen, and we made this happen for *us*!  Let's keep doing that!

    <title>Allegory and symbolism</title>

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;I'm rereading the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and read this little bit in Tolkein's introduction:
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;"Other arrangements could be devised according to the tastes or views of those who like allegory or topical reference.  But I cordially dislike allegory in all its manifestations, and always have done so since I grew old and wary enough to detect its presence.  I much prefer history, true or feigned, with its varied applicability to the thought and experience of readers.  I think that many confuse 'applicability' with 'allegory'; but the one resides in the freedom of the reader, and the other in the purposed domination of the author."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;He's talking about those who compare the Ring series with WWII -- that first bit meaning "you could compare it with, really, whatever event you like, if you're one of those people who likes to compare fictional stories with actual events."  [Discussion of LotR is left to other tribes, please! :) Seriously, this is a discussion about *allegory*, not LotR...  Bear with me!]
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;What it means to me and firefalls is one of my biggest beliefs -- strengthened now by Tolkein's affirmation:  I really don't care what firefalls "mean" to me.  I care what they mean to other people.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;And he punctuated why I believe this.  Let me paraphrase that last line:
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;"I think many confuse 'applicability' with 'allegory'; but the first implies the freedom of the audience to apply the art to their own life experiences finding their own personal meaning there, and the other is the *intentional* enslavement of the artist to an allegory or a system of symbology."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;In particular when that symbology is believed, by the artist, to be universal.  [Or worse, when that symbology is believed to be clearly understood only by an elite group of art-scholars, and all else are the ignorant "unwashed masses".  Beh!]
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;My art has symbology to it, but I refuse to be a slave to it.  Symbology is a fine wine, to be sipped, and to complement the main meal.  You relish the taste, but don't allow yourself to go so far that you crave it or need it.  If you must always turn to your symbology for meaning -- or worse, *purpose* for your actions or decisions -- then you're creating too much in your head, and very little in your heart.  You have become a drunk, lost in your own conversation, screaming at the confused passersby that they somehow "don't get it" because they don't understand the symbology.  In truth, you have lost your own understanding of *them*...  [The symptom is the artist's dismissal of their own audience who have a hard time understanding their work.]
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;I hate art that "judges" you -- that makes you feel like you're missing something important.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;My purpose in art is to start with an interesting or beautiful central concept, and use symbolism [if at all] as embellishment -- a spice or hidden treasure.  The core should be simple and clear enough to speak directly to the audience's heart.  The symbology should be vague enough to evoke personal memories or feelings or thoughts UNintentionally on my part -- like well-written poetry that feels *right*.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;My favorite is when people come up to me and *tell me* what the firefall "means".  Tell me with such certainty as if everyone has the same reaction, or understands *exactly* what they mean without words.  Esp. when those "meanings" are often so very different!  Yeah!  *That's* when I know I'm doing something right.

    <title>Crucible Fire Opera!</title>

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;Wow, everybody!  Thank you so much for coming out and supporting Egeria!  What we got from the door exceeded our expectations, and we are deeply humbled and honored by your support.

&lt;br/&gt;Again and again, we feel how important our community is to us, and also our place and responsibility to you in return.  We are very touched.  Thank you!

&lt;br/&gt;We had an amazing time!  Walt's music -- which we listened to for the first time on friday -- was just perfect!  That he was inspired to make music for the fountain is *exactly* the reason I make art: I want more than mere "interaction"; I feel my art succeeds best when people can *express* themselves in their own ways, using art that I made as the canvas.  Such creations are more compliment than any words could ever express...

&lt;br/&gt;Well, I'm going off the deep end here.  I'm just so blown away.

&lt;br/&gt;This week itself has been an amazing week for art, and Sparky and I are suddenly realizing that we are actually coming of our own as artists -- something neither of us ever dreamed of before!

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;We got the fountain main body assembled yesterday.  now for the piping.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;At 7:30, we'd like to ask a sliding scale to help cover costs of fuel.  She runs through 1/2 *barrel* of fuel, and at $5.85/gal, that's about $160!  Or $1.80/minute!  So if you enjoy Egeria for at least 3 minutes, it'd be nice to kick in $5 to help us out. :)

&lt;br/&gt;I got an email this summer from someone who wanted to write music for Egeria!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;One of the things I like about the firefall at Burning Man is that it is *quiet*, so we decided that the best music for Egeria would be to play once for a very special occasion.  So he wrote a special piece for us to play Thursday of Burning Man for our wedding anniversary...
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Well, we weren't finished by Thursday, so we never got to play his music...
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;This friday is our anniversary of when Scott proposed to me.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Our Burning Man wedding was our marriage promise to our *community*.  The day Scott proposed to me and I said "yes" was our marriage promise *to eachother*.  Both of us felt profoundly changed the next day -- far more than either of us expected.  It is the day we became married in our hearts.  At the time, we didn't see any point in another wedding -- we felt *already* married!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;In 1999, Scott was invited to our Burning Man camp by a friend of mine.  It was his first year and my second.  So I was working on a big project [the Cauldron firefall] and he was looking for some way to contribute.  He got interested in my project and we worked together on it -- he took care of the electrical stuff so the fuel pump would work.  [He bought our little EU1000 generator for the Cauldron that year.]  We both grew up in North Carolina, and went to college 20 minutes away.  We have *many* common friends but never met or even knew about eachother.  It was out here -- through the firefall -- that we finally met.  It was destiny. :)

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;I've been getting more work done on the template so the middle support can rest on the base -- and Egeria can run as two tiers instead of three.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Yeah, it won't be as nice as three, but it'll be *much* easier to deal with and might even be reasonable to take to venues for running instead of the Cauldron -- eg the Crucible, or the Pacifica show we've done the last two years.

&lt;br/&gt;Once I weld on the bolts to the template, then I can start assembling the full 3-tier fountain for Nov. 7th and work on the template on the side.

&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Originally I designed Egeria so that the middle bowl was at eye-level for someone about 6' tall.  in the end, we built her taller.  Since the water-squirting fish are short enough, I decided to cut the midle support down some to bring her back more to what I originally wanted.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Yep, cut 4" out of the middle support.
&lt;br/&gt;Now, we'll have to weld the support back together, adjust the piping [just about all of it -- ug], and then we can assemble her!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Barring lazyness and working on other projects and stuff, I hope to start seriously assembling her in a week or so!
